Defensive Driving – Really?

By Clare Winfrey, Austin

So, we all have a tendency to speed – some of us more frequently than others. After receiving a speeding ticket for going a mere 40 mph down an unnecessary 30 mph road on the 4th of July, dressed in patriotic running gear and confident
the officer wasn’t actually going to ticket me… I have finally decided to deal with the situation… three months and a warrant later. I don’t understand the need for defensive driving when it really does nothing. I know the rules of the road,I just don’t appreciate the speed of a turtle. The point being, now I am stuck with a time consuming online tutorial when I am not even learning anything new. Am I going to go spend six hours on a Saturday sitting in a class full of losers? No. Am I going to rent a movie from Blockbuster that I know I will only fall asleep to? No. Am I going to join an online course to take whenever I want and possibly come home drunk on the weekends to complete (story of a college student)? YES. I have been opening the file when I get to work, minimizing it so the “time” can run out, and then click through all the slides without reading them to answer questions when prompted. The only two things I have gained from defensive driving this go around are a) something to consume my time at work when I actually feel like reading the slides and b) memorizing my license number, only because you have to enter it every time you begin a session.

Note: If you are ever in need of a defensive driving course… I highly recommend defensivedriving.com.
