Austin Restaurant Week at Louie’s 106, Bang or Bust?

By Elizabeth Roley, Austin

Only during ARW will you find me at Louie’s 106 on a Tuesday. I’m not the type to splurge on a mid-week dinner, especially in these hard economic times (aren’t you tired of hearing that? Come on Obama, get this thing rolling).

Is ARW really a bang for your buck? Let’s do some math:

Louie’s is on the $35/person list

$9.75 Escargots +

$24.00 Shrimp and Scallop Risotto +

$5.50 Crème Brulee (price not disclosed on the menu, called up Louie to get the skinny…)

= a $39.25 value for $35 (before incidentals)

$9.00 for a completely necessary glass of Pinot Noir +

$12 tax/tip

= $56 total

All in all I saved $4.25 on the meal. Is it worth it you ask??

Atmosphere: first impression, hostess greeted us in a neon bra hanging out of her strappy tank and donned a pair of Converse high tops (leave those on the street and at least wear a shirt) – negative. Round table in back corner and a quirky, attentive (but not annoying) waitress – plus, plus

Apps: My order – Escargots, looked a little charred, but won my affection with your expected nutty, garlic taste

AMB pick – Crab and Avocado salad – rich crab a perfect match for the fresh avocado

JEJ pick – Tuna tar tar – THE BEST, crisp, tangy marinade and anything with a wonton gets extra points

Entrée: AMB warned me against the Risotto, but I ordered it anyway… flavor was slightly bland and texture, let’s say the lobster consommé made it too soupy for my liking, but the shrimp saved the dish in the end

Entrée duex: Pork Tenderloin with a honey-dijon glaze, a manly feast but hit the spot for its consumers

Dessert: Crème Brulee – candied shell thick and flamed to perfection but the filling could afford to be fluffier… this is not to say I didn’t gobble up the whole thing

The answer, well you be the judge. I know my next Louie’s trip will be apps only, plus I heard they have awesome french fries (my fav!) at lunch – don’t let the favorite food comment discredit this post – they’re an all-American classic.

And, hey, ARW is for charity, so get out there and eat!

The fun lasts through the 23rd (sans weekends). http://restaurantweekaustin.com/
