    vampireweekendcontra

    Vampire WeekendContra (XL)
Are these Ivy League golden boys immune to the curse of the sophomore slump? We’ll find out early in the new year, when Vampire Weekend trade African-inspired rhythms for an album that keyboard/guitar whiz Rostam Batmanglij describes as full of songs that “would be perfect for driving up the Pacific coast.”

    gainsbourg_IRM

    Charlotte GainsbourgIRM (Because)
Fresh off of her role in Lars von Trier’s international scandal of a film Antichrist, Gainsbourg teams up with a significantly less controversial collaborator: Beck. Mr. Hansen both produced and wrote for IRM (the French abbreviation for “MRI”), along with chiming in on backing vocals.

    Beach House - Teen Dream

    Beach HouseTeen Dream (Sub Pop)
So far, Baltimore’s Beach House are on a roll, turning out two flawless albums of atmospheric dream-pop. And we have every reason to believe that Teen Dream, the band’s first full-length for new label Sub Pop, will live up to its predecessors. In a Premature Evaluation, Stereogum offered the following high praise: “At first listen, the songs feel like simple lullabies. There isn’t a shiny facade, really. It’s only after you take your time with it and let the songs sink in that you realize you’ll likely never see the bottom.”

    SpoonTransference (Merge)
Veteran indie rockers Spoon rarely disappoint, which is why we’re counting down the minutes until the release of their seventh album. And, as frontman Britt Daniel told fans on the band’s MySpace blog, something special sets Transference apart: “This is the first record we’ve made without a producer or heavy of any kind, and I don’t know for sure because I’ll never hear this record in the same way that someone who didn’t make it will, but I think you can tell. I can. When I listen to it, I think, hey, that’s how I woulda done it!”

    Magnetic-Fields-Realism

    The Magnetic FieldsRealism (Nonesuch)
Magnetic Fields mastermind Stephin Merritt has always been a fan of concepts and tributes. He’s written 69 Love Songs and, most recently, an entire album (2008’s Distortion) inspired by the Jesus and Mary Chain. Now, on his band’s ninth full-length, Merritt is taking his cues from psychedelic ’60s and ’70s pop.

    hotchip

    Hot ChipOne Life Stand (EMI)
Is One Life Stand really Hot Chip’s fourth album? These electro-pop standbys are sure to provide fodder for the sweatiest dance parties of 2009. And their promising new record even features contributions from a bona fide ’70s rock legend: This Heat drummer Charles Hayward.
Stream “One Life Stand” and “Taking It In”

    February 9

    heligoland

    Massive AttackHeligoland (Virgin)
Trip-hop trailblazers Massive Attack are back with their fifth album. And if you can think of a high-profile singer in the US or Britain, chances are he or she is contributing guest vocals to a Heligoland track: The record includes appearances by Damon Albarn, TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, Elbow’s Guy Garvey, Hope Sandoval, and Martina Topley-Bird, among others.

    yeasayer

Yeasayer – Odd Blood (Secretly Canadian)
Fans of Animal Collective fell madly in love with Yeasayer’s spiritually inclined 2007 debut, All Hour Cymbals. Now, the band has intimated that it’s changed its sound drastically for the follow up — and the futuristic pop of debut single “Ambling Alp” proves it.
Watch the (NSFW) video for “Ambling Alp”:

    February 16

The Game- The R.E.D. Album (album)

    The Game - The R.E.D. Album (Geffen/Interscope)
Like Das Racist, we vociferously disagreed with Sasha Frere-Jones‘ (and Simon Reynolds‘ subsequent) pronouncements that hip-hop is dead. That said, we don’t see many forthcoming records in the genre that genuinely interest us. But perhaps the Game’s fourth album — which features collaborations with both Lil’ Wayne and Gucci Mane — will set a high bar for the rest of the year’s releases. “R.E.D.” is supposed to stand for “rededicated,” after all.

    February 23

    xiuxiu

Xiu XiuDear God, I Hate Myself (Kill Rock Stars)
Of all the reasons we love Xiu Xiu (and there are many), our favorite is that they keep indie rock weird. This album will be the art-damaged experimentalists’ first without the versatile Caralee McElroy, but here’s hoping new addition Angela Seo can pick up the slack. If not, well, hey — at least the cheery-sounding title track was composed on a Nintendo DS.

    March 23

    goldfrapp

    GoldfrappHead First (Mute)
Goldfrapp pissed off fans and critics alike with their most recent album, last year’s scaled-back Seventh Tree. So will we be hearing the old Goldfrapp, the new Goldfrapp, or something complete different on Head First? The label is selling the new material as optimistic and fantastical, which sounds promising. We’ll get our first hint of whether it’s right on March 8, when the band releases Head First’s lead single, “Rocket.”

    May

    arcadefire1

The Arcade Fire – [TBA] (Merge)
Okay, we don’t actually know anything about this album yet. In fact, it’s still officially a rumor, as no one from the Arcade Fire camp has confirmed it. But we’re hoping that by continuing to talk about it, we’ll force the band to release its first new music since 2007.

So what did we miss? What’s your most anticipated album of 2010?

  • Guide to Menhattan: Seriously, Tiger!?

    Dear Tiger,

Up until last week, your reputation has been spotless. Now you have fallen to the level of other mortals due to your indiscretions. Nobody is perfect, so the fact that your squeaky-clean image has been tarnished is not the issue. Cheating is to professional athletes as being a giant dbag is to John Mayer. It is (sadly) common and expected.

But the two "WTF were you thinking??" points I want to make are:

    1) Have you seen your wife? Not that I condone cheating if your wife is fugly, but OMG!?!? She might be one of the hottest women ever. You cannot do better than her. I get that people cheat for a lot of reasons, but I really don't think any of the reasons could possibly measure up to the hottness of your wife. Especially the ones you picked up in Vegas. You are a fool. But, you seem to have realized that and are willing to pay up (monetarily and emotionally) to make it work. Good for you.

    2) One of the skanks who has come out with allegations (and texts, voicemails and detailed accounts) is referred to as "a former contestant on Tool Academy." YOU ARE BETTER THAN THAT.
Note to all celebrities committing adultery: TRY AND CHOOSE SOMEONE WHOSE MOST NOTABLE RESUME REFERENCE IS NOT A TRASHY VH1 RELATY SHOW WITH TOOL IN THE TITLE.

So what should Tiger do now? According to
Gawker, he should play some golf.

"Your job is simple. Just be Tiger Woods. That means, continue being the most robotic, uninteresting sports megastar of our time. You, sir, are a cipher. Fans and sponsors love you for it, because they can project whatever image they want upon you, and your inscrutable, uninteresting being simply swallows it up.

Golf is the most uninteresting spectator sport in the world. Golf fans are not moralists. They are people who believe that golf shirts in various shades of coral are acceptable outerwear. They are the bland upper crust of Middle America. That, and rich assholes who love to cheat on their wives. Neither of these groups of golf fans cares one bit about your marital infidelity, Tiger. Nor do your sponsors. What they do care about is being forced to think about something other than golf."

Update: Too good not to share. My mom's opinion on Tiger:

Do you find it ironic that golf is a game where integrity of not moving the ball and cheating is sooooooooooooo important?? and the fact he is such a competitor, but slutting around wit
h cocktail waitresses...how hard are THEY to pick up? He could at least try for a nun or something if he wanted to challenge himself!!

Decadence on a Dime: HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

    By Kate Thompson, Dallas, Texas

In honor of the month of sugar and spice and everything nice, I bring you my FAVORITE Paula Dean recipe. I give her full credit, because I don’t know that I would have the cajones to put this much delicious goodness in one recipe. These cookies are extremely rich and perfect at a party or just in a tin at home. And did I mention that they’re extremely easy? No baking involved, just mix, heat, and chill. So simple. Here we go!

    Paula Dean’s Low Country Cookies

    Filling:

1 16 oz box graham crackers

    12 Tbsp (1-1/2 sticks) butter

    1 cup sugar

    1 egg

    ½ cup milk

    1 cup chopped pecans

    1 cup shredded coconut

    Topping:

    2 cups powdered sugar

    1 tsp vanilla

    4 Tbsp (1/2 stick butter)

    3 Tbsp milk

    For the Filling:

Line a 9-by-13 inch pyrex dish with graham crackers. Try to get to the graham crackers to completely cover the bottom of the dish as much as possible without breaking them up too much and without overlapping the crackers. Prepare chopped pecans, 1 cup graham cracker crumbs, and coconut. Melt butter in a medium saucepan and add sugar. Beat the egg and milk together; add to butter mixture. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Add the nut, graham cracker, coconut mixture. Pour over the crackers in the pan. Cover with another layer of whole graham crackers.

    For the Topping:

Beat all ingredients (powdered sugar, vanilla, ½ stick butter, milk) and spread over the top layer of crackers.

Chill. Cut into small squares. Store in refrigerator until ready to serve. Can be made up to a week in advance. Enjoy!

Tis the Season for the Party DRESS!

    1. Torn by Ronny Kobo Ari Crystals Cheetah Dress ($198)
When Christopher Decarnin sent a silver cheetah print mini-dress down his F/W 09 runway, we thought it was the cat's meow. That's why we couldn't have been more pleased when we discovered this equally party purr-fect version for a more reasonable price. The tank-style mini is so easy to wear, and the simple silhouette balances out the bold crystal animal prints making the look more easy-breezy cocktail than buttoned-up black tie. We recommend taking styling notes from Balmain's show and toughening up the flirty dress with silver-tipped buckle boots for a fashion-forward after-hours look.

    2. 3.1 Phillip Lim Surplus Neckline Dress ($625)
While at first glance this sophisticated forties-inspired silhouette might not seem like the average night-out number, we'd undoubtedly reach for this 3.1 Phillip Lim frock for any sophisticated soiree. The rose gold hue is inherently glamorous and will set you stylishly apart in a sea of black, while the intricate pleating and use of burnout silk is so very luxe meets laissez-faire. Additionally, we love the party-perfect kitsch of an oversized black bow so your lovely figure won't get lost in the draping. Knowing Ashley Olsen's adoration for the vintage aesthetic, we could easily see her pairing this with dark tights and platform pumps, and maybe even a faux-fur, for evening attire that's equal parts unique, polished, and bohemian chic.

    3. Alexander Wang Drapey Stretch Sequin Dress ($815)
This draped shimmering mini is truly a to-die-for dress. The sequined finish looks haute for the holidays, hitting just the right celebratory note, while the navy hue imbues it with a sense of sophistication. Additionally, the cowl neckline and asymmetrical draping add a ladylike appeal that is an intriguing contrast to the hiked-up hemline. Although this exact dress was not seen on Wang's F/W 09 runway, we'd still borrow tips from that tough-girl collection and pair this glistening mini with lace-up booties and patterned tights for an element of edginess and a fully directional, festive look. Finally, for an equally lustrous ensemble at a more wallet-friendly price, you can pick up Velvet by Graham & Spencer's Josie Sequined Dress ($209) which has a comparable neckline and slinky silhouette.

    4. Elizabeth and James Penelope Dress icon ($365).
Here at the Who What Wear offices, we have to oppose Kermit the Frog on this one point: we think it's truly easy being green. (In fact, we seem to have a personal penchant for all verdant shades!) Yet, perhaps the reason we're always drawn to this color—particularly for the season of celebrations—is because it's excitingly unexpected and always manages to look youthful and fresh. This particular Elizabeth and James dress is a perfect pick not just because we've made such ado about the hue that echoes the jewel-toned frocks seen at Valentino's F/W 09 runway, but also because a strapless style is always holiday ready. Making this dress even more present-able is the black ribbon tie, which highlights a narrow waist and adds a flirty touch. Another great option for a smaller investment is Aqua's Strapless Satin Tube Dress ($88), which has the same green and black scheme. Whichever you choose, we'd recommend staying true to the classical feel of both dresses and pair them with a glittery heel and a Blake Lively inspired pony-braid hybrid updo for a red-carpet ready ensemble.

    5. Acne Cold Shoulder Fantasy Dress ($840)
Perhaps the most whimsical of today picks is Acne's ballerina-punk silk dress, thanks to its wonderfully wild look! The bold pattern and exposed tulle resemble Louis Vuitton's edgy F/W 09 collection, which in turn brings us back to the party-hardy decade of the eighties. However, the frock prevails as of-the-moment due to its one-shoulder strap and mix of animalistic prints. We could see someone with insouciant style, like Taylor Momsen, pairing it with patterned tights and black ankle boots (and maybe even lace gloves!) for an uptown/downtown look that's spot-on for the season. However, since this price tag is something of an investment for a party frock, we also think the Strapless Tiered Dress ($238) from BCBG or the Halter Pleated Bubble Dress ($129) by bebe are both equally fun and flirty picks!—Liza Kaplan

It's Beginning to Feel a lot Like Christmas

I am more than ready for Christmas 2009. I don't know about you, but Fall 2009 has really taken a toll on me and I am more than ready for some cool weather and some much needed R&R. Sorry for the lack of posts; I've had a seriously busy last couple of weeks. Think 3 stops in my 5 day Thanksgiving vacay (Tulsa + Plano + Wichita Falls = Jealous?).

So, to brighten up your post holiday blues I've decided to give you some real gems to brighten your day in the name of Christmas, sort of:

Hot pink is not a 'slimming’ color, especially if it is cutting off circulation to the rest of your body. The blue shoes are a nice offset aren't they?. If you look closely, you can see what I hope is underwear crammed up in there. (Didn't want you to miss that)

    Feed the Animals

The Animal Rescue site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily so they can meet their quota of getting FREE FOOD donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute (about 15 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals for free'. This doesn't cost you a thing.

Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site, please pass it along to people you know:

The Genuine Gentleman's View on, ahem, Running Water

Dear Genuine Gentleman, do we need to run the water while using the restroom?

Well readers this might be a funny question to some of you but it is an actual question from one of my favorite readers. Stacey Deal, from Houston, wanted to know a man’s opinion on this topic and because she herself is a water runner. (All names have been changed to protect the innocent)

The first thing I think of when the water start’s running immediately is wow, wonder how that’s gonna go!

Ok, now let’s get down to it. There was a Japanese book imported to the United States in 1993 titled Everyone Poops and guess what guys, Every Woman does. That does not mean that we need to ge

t into a discussion about the make up of the deposit but it does raise the question, “do we want to hear it?”

The answer is obviously no, but does the water trick work? Yes, yes it does, unless there is some kind of PA system broadcasting from the bathroom the water trick works. Even though we know what is going on in there we don’t need to experience all the details. Thank you, thank you, and thank you.

This wonderful maneuver has kept men everywhere debating whether or not hot girls poop and thanks to all the water runners out there we may never know the actual answer.

It’s Southern Rock ‘n’ Roll but I Like It

    By Elizabeth Roley, Austin, Texas

Noble Dog, founded only a couple years ago by Taylor Burns and Preston Wimberly, has already become a regular on the Austin music scene. Burns’ vocals, belted out with a southern drawl, make for an entertaining performance as his passion for the music shows through every lyric. Stage left, on lead guitar Wimberly’s talented strumming wows fans. The music is complimented by Mike Bernal on the drums and Aaron Hatmaker on bass, which makes for a soulful quartet. Their new album, Let’s Go Home, dropped November 5th and you can buy it now on iTunes and for under $6 bucks, you won’t regret it.

Noble Dog’s next big gig is at Maggie Mae’s Gibson Room (upstairs) on December 4th at 11 p.m. That’s a Friday night, so there is no excuse to miss out! It’s easy, get there at 10:30 and meet the band, then grab a beer and get ready to groove to the sounds of some down home rock and roll.

You Are Going to Love These Sites

    By Jennifer Sullivan, Austin, Texas

I don't know about the rest of you...but there are some days at work when the internet just doesn't have anything to offer. I have checked twitter, facebook, my usual blogs, perused the news and pandora is playing the same song for the 500th time this month. Thank goodness my 19 year old brother is looking out for me in this crazy post collegiate world....he introduced me to 2 websites this week that truly have changed my afternoons at work.

This website is the best waste of time on the internet, in a good way. You check off a few categories that interest you, like art and humor, and you start stumbling. I have learned some great useless facts, found some new blogs and seen some crazy talented (and talentless) people strut their stuff.

If you ever miss those great late night dance parties...this is the place to go. Playlists range from 80's to classic rock to throwback rap. It's all free and a great alternative to Pandora.

Sea of Shoes J. Aldridge's Chloe Inspired Must Have Boots

One can only aspire to such glamourosity (that's right, say it with me now, glamour-osity) as has been attained by young fashion blogger J. Aldridge (pictured at left). Her long standing style blog SeaofShoes.com has brought her a lot of fame because of her whimsical sense of style and frankly just how long it has been around the blogosphere. There are urban legends about her mother being some famous fashion magazine editor, but a few things are for sure, she is from Dallas, has impeccable taste, unlimited funds and has had unprecedented access to the fashion world.

Which now includes a line of shoes at Urban Outfitters that I must say has some pretty solid choices at recession-chic prices.

My most favorite pair are these Chloe inspired (see our l'obsession with Hannah McGibbon's debut fall RTW line here in our inaugural post) lace up wedges and at $128 with free returns and exchanges you probably can't go wrong (right).

Compared to the Chloe original pair at $695 they look just about the same at a fraction of the price (left).

    The Genuine Gentleman On Brains

Attention Well Set Readers: You’re not stupid so stop acting like it.

You graduated from high school, college, and now you have a good job. Chances are if I were to see you running around on a Friday or Saturday night I will probably hear some of the most intellectually void conversations ever. I am not a mental giant myself but my god, what are you doing?

In what dating advice book does it tell you to act as if you have not one single brain cell in your head? Do me a favor, no do all

mankind a favor, and stop acting like an idiot and start acting like the intelligent, beautiful woman you are.

Brains are cool, brains are attractive, so if you have big brains then show it off!

The bigger the better, just like boobs!

If There Was One Thing That You Could Buy Right Meow This Should be It

    Bow Tie Tee, $195
The most fantastic tee shirt ever... RED Valentino gets in the holiday spirit with this simple white jersey tee (the jersey is nicer than your basic tee shirt knit) that looks like it’s been wrapped up like a present with an enormous bow.

Pair this with black jeans, red lipstick and embellished flats to really make an entrance at any holiday gathering
