The Marfa Texas Information Overload
Dear Well Set readers,
Recovered from ACL? Hope you enjoyed yourselves. I can’t wait to see all the mud photo
s. Bet nobody saw that one coming. We lucky Marfa residents got a slice of the action on Thursday with a sold out show by Bon Iver and Megafaun, presented by Ballroom Marfa at the Crowley Theater. It was beautiful and intimate, and then we watched them pack up their vans and hit the road to ACL.
If you are up for another weekend of crowds, concerts, and ridiculous numbers of out-of-towner’s, pack up your car and get down to Marfa this Thursday. I’ll skip the introduction to the world of Marfa for this post, and just
toss the websites and band names at you. But really, you should come see what all the fuss is about. The Chinati Foundation’s Open House weekend draws quite the crowd. Though this is my first one, I hear our teensy population of 2,121 nearly doubles. They will be having art opening’s, lectures and a free outdoor evening concert by Dan Deacon.
Austin’s own Liz Lambert’s Marfa creation, El Cosmico is hosting two nights of live music as well. Their roster includes: Amy Cook, Ben Kweller, Patty Griffin, Hotel Brotherhood, Tift Merritt, and the Heartless Bastards. Pitching a tent at El Cosmico would be your best, and most economical, bet at this point, as all the hotels are booked solid. It sounds like more fun anyway. And don’t miss the sandlot baseball on Saturday! Austin's Texas Playboys versus Los Yonke Gallos de Marfa. Read about the game here.
There’ll be a smattering of other events piggybacking on all the action, I don’t even know how to write about it yet. If you do make it down, swing by the Ballroom and say hello!
Your Marfa reporter,
emily elise mcmillan
