Totally Rad New Hipster Act: Neon Indian

For quite some time, the brain child behind Neon Indian was kept a secret. Who was this man bringing back techno 80s pop in such a fun and brilliant fashion? No one knew (hence the picture on his myspace page). Well my friends, the secret is out. Neon Indian is Alan Palomo. Son of Jorge, a Mexican pop star from the 80s, Palomo gets inspiration from his father’s glory days and incorporates them into his dream-wave hipster sound. He’s also the DJ mastermind VEGA – his beats are hot. I’ve had the privilege to see VEGA perform and hang out with him; he’s a totally rad dude. He also made his album, “Open Psychic Chasms” in my boyfriend’s scary old house – I know, I know - I’m so hip.

My favorite song on the album is Deadbeat Summer. So fun, light and catchy. I’ve been listening to it a lot lately with these rain-filled days.

Here’s what Pitchfork has to say – “Working with Brooklyn-based visual collaborator Alicia Scardetta as Neon Indian, Palomo has brought all the best of 2009's summer sounds-- bedroom production, borrowed nostalgia, unresolved sadness, deceptively agile popcraft-- together on a single album.”

“Open Psychic Chasms” hit indie record stores today – so check him out and yo
u’ll be on the forefront of the Austin hipster scene. And he’ll be playing the Blue Stage at Fun Fun Fun Fest on November 7. Buy your tickets here.
