Where to Buy Cheap Beer at the Texas State Fair

By Christina Good, Dallas Native

Pack your bags and grab some orange shit because it’s TX/OU weekend in Dallas! A weekend of debauchery is ahead of us and so is the State Fair of Texas, AKA heaven on earth. If you are coherent enough to enjoy the wonders of the Fair on Saturday, here are a few suggestions.

Avoid blowing cash on games. As an adolescent, the Midway rules the State Fair experience. After countles

s attempts to get the damn ball to hit Scooby Doo’s stupid nose and land in the freaking box, children leave the Midway without a giant stuffed giraffe and a hole in their

pocket. The Midway is at it’s best on Tuesday night with it‘s ½ priced rides.

Bust out the Tums and get your fried food on. Try the jalapeƱo cheddar corn dog this year, or the new fried peaches n’ cream. Dare to dabble with the fried butter, and top it all off with a candy apple. Nachos, Texas taters, Frito pie, and tamales are all honorable mentions. The deep fried authentic Mexican taco is delicious and even better with some funnel cake.

Do NOT buy beer for 12 coupons. Coupons are a genius way for vendors to get you to unknowingly pay ridiculous amounts of money. A beer is 6 coupons in the Food Pavilion. The Chili Parlor is an easy way to feed your alcohol itch for only $3.

Free Shows are where it’s at. Get yourself a corndog and a shiner bock (from the Food Pavilion) and go to the Bird Show. Kick back at the Pig Races or get in a good laugh at the borderline psychotic Dancing Dog Show.. Where you can check out some loony lady from America’s Got Talent. Go watch Will Schutze puppeteer at the World on a String Show. Seriously.

Livestock is for ATM dorks but Boris is definitely something you want to see. The 1,100 lb pig is a celebrity in the State Fair livestock world and well worth checking out. It’s a free freak show unlike that Tiny Tina scam.

Texas has the longest running state fair, but it is never long enough. Sadly, the festivities end October 18th. See you there!
